Chief Strange Horse was an Upper Brule Sioux. The Brule were a sub-tribe of the Teton division of the great Dakota tribe. They were good hunters, with a large number of horses. When the white settlers began to pass through the Dakota country, the Brulé suffered from diseases introduced by the settlers more than any other division of the tribe because the Brule were closest to the trail.
